KCK wrestlers earn medals at SM North Invitational

Washington junior Reddi Johnson wrestled Shawnee Mission North senior Josephine Rathsam in a 130-pound match at the Shawnee Mission North Invitational. Johnson pinned Rathsam in the second period for first place in the tournament.

Wrestlers from six Wyandotte County high schools hit the mats this weekend at the 38th Annual Shawnee Mission North Invitational meet. The venerable high school has traditionally hosted a boys’ tournament and this year added a girls’ tournament to run in parallel.

Washington junior Reddi Johnson won the 130-pound bracket in the girls’ tournament, extending her undefeated streak to 31 matches this season. Johnson is ranked sixth in her weight in Class 5A in the latest KWCA poll.

North’s Josephine Rathsam gave Johnson some trouble in the final match, scoring two early takedowns, but the Wildcats star dismissed the challenge with a pin late in the second period. Washington finished fourth of the eight teams competing, losing third place to St. James Academy by a single point.

Turner’s Jaycee Crumet finished first in the 190/235 bracket, winning all three of her matches by fall.

In the boys’ tournament, Turner’s Kaden Roebuck finished third at 165 pounds, earning his medal with a third-period takedown and 3-0 points over North’s Aidan Carmack.

Washington’s Ryan Edward (175) and Genaro Jaramillo (215) both finished in fourth place.

Teams are shifting to post-season mode with the conference tournaments next week and regionals just behind. The KSHSAA state tournaments will take place Feb. 28 and Mar. 1, in Overland Park for 6A schools and in Park City for 5A schools.
