Washington rolls at Harmon

Washington’s Jamari Williams elevated for a jump shot during the Wildcats’ game at Harmon Friday evening. Washington went on to win 96-34.

The Washington Wildcats routed Harmon Friday evening, 96-34. The Wildcats were hot on the offensive end, with six players scoring in double figures, and just as effective on defense.

Washington’s active defense forced Harmon into attempting risky passes, which the Wildcats often picked off and returned for fast-break baskets.

Ja’Mari Williams led Washington with 19 points and a variety of scoring moves down low. Williams was also 3-for-3 at the free throw line. Jayden Boggess scored 18, including two baskets beyond the arc.

Also in double figures — Cam’Ron Fields (16), Antrell Wren (14), Savion Stone (11), and E.J. Berry (10).

Jackson Williams and Brandon Anfison paced the Hawks with eight points each, and Mikey Hammer dropped in seven.

The win takes the Wildcats to 4-1, with two Meadowlark Conference road wins under their belt. Their only loss is to 6A Olathe Northwest, led by former Harmon head coach David Gonzales. They’ll pick back up after the break with a visit from the St. Mary’s Academy Crusaders on Jan. 7.

Harmon is still looking for the first season win at 0-4. The Hawks will play at Sumner Academy on Jan. 7.

Washington senior Amya Gatson finished a drive with a close-range shot just outside the lane. Gatson scored 17 points in the win.

The girls’ match-up was also controlled by the visitors — the Lady Wildcats won 53-16, holding advantages in height, strength and experience.

Senior Amya Gatson posted 17 points for the maroon and white, her momentum and handle off the dribble reliably getting her a bucket or a trip to the free throw line. Asya Drew, Oluwatosin Adejo, and Teasha Hunter each chipped in seven points.

Jacqueline Martinez led the way for the Lady Hawks with seven points, and Skyla Howard and Keyaira Shabazz dropped in four.

Stymied by Washington’s press through the first half, Harmon found success in the third quarter by passing long over the top, but the Cats soon got wise and clamped back down.

Washington now holds a 2-4 record in the young season, opening the season with a win over Bishop Ward before losing four straight. They’ll have a challenging match-up on the road at St. James Academy on Jan. 7.

Harmon drops to 2-3, having posted early wins over Guadalupe Centers and Paseo Academy from Kansas City, Mo. The team’s next match-up is at Sumner on Jan. 7.

Harmon’s Jackson Williams shot a three-pointer in the game against Washington.
