Kansas’s August 6 primary set up a match between former congresswoman Nancy Boyda and former Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt for the second district seat being vacated by Jake LaTurner.
Schmidt, who served as AG from 2010 to 2022 and narrowly lost the 2022 governor’s race to Laura Kelly, prevailed in the Republican contest with 53.1 percent in a field of five, his closest challenger being Shawn Tiffany, a feedlot operator from Delevan who campaigned from Schmidt’s right and garnered 19.8 percent.
Nancy Boyda, a former pharmaceutical chemist who represented the second district from 2007 to 2009, defeated KCK architect and former KU basketball player Matt Kleinmann by 4 percent in the Democratic primary to advance to the general election against Schmidt.
Incumbent LaTurner, previously a state senator and treasurer, announced his retirement in April to spend more time with his family of four young children, having served two terms in Congress.
