Residents to get property tax break after budget review

Due to budget errors in three local tax jurisdictions, some Wyandotte County residents will see slightly lower property tax rates than they were told on their most recent statements.

The submitted budgets for the Kansas City, Kansas Community College, the Kaw Valley Drainage District, and the Wolcott Drainage District each exceeded the revenue neutral standard that they were required to meet, and as a result, their corresponding mill levies based on those budgets will be recalculated to a lower value.

It’s not only a Wyandotte County issue, though. County Administrator David Johnston said in a statement from the UG, “We have heard that the revenue neutral state legislation has caused confusion within several Kansas counties. The impacted taxing jurisdictions have been made aware of errors in their submitted budgets and are working together to ensure all records are corrected and updated.”

The average adjustment per taxpayer is $20, and no action is needed to get the lower rate. Residents who overpaid in their first-half tax statement (due Dec. 20) will receive a credit on their second-half statement, or a refund if the full annual amount was paid.
