Playoff preview ends in scoreless draw for Current

Washington Spirit defender Tara McKeown dispossessed Kansas City Current forward Bia Zaneratto. The Current created but couldn’t convert several promising chances in the 0-0 draw.

The Kansas City Current made National Women’s Soccer League history Saturday night, becoming the fastest team ever to reach 50 points in just 20 regular season matches. The milestone came during a hard-fought 0-0 draw against the Washington Spirit at CPKC Stadium.

The match lived up to its billing as a potential playoff preview, with both teams creating chances but unable to find the breakthrough. The Current dominated possession in the first half, with midfielder Ally Sentnor orchestrating several dangerous attacks. In the 15th minute, Sentnor’s lofted ball nearly found forward Bia Zaneratto, but Washington goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury came off her line to collect.

Kansas City’s best first-half opportunity came in the 30th minute through a flowing move that saw Sentnor’s backward pass find Izzy Rodriguez. The defender’s cross reached Michelle Cooper at the back post, whose header across goal narrowly missed connecting with Nichelle Prince.

The Spirit offered little attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes, managing just two shots with none on target. Washington improved after halftime, with Trinity Rodman forcing Lorena’s first save in the 48th minute from distance.

The match’s defining moment came in the 61st minute when substitute Debinha sparked Kansas City’s best scoring chance. The Brazilian midfielder played Sentnor at the top of the penalty area, leading to a scramble that saw both Debinha and Zaneratto force saves from Kingsbury before defender Tara McKeown cleared off the line.

Washington’s task became more difficult in the 66th minute when midfielder Hal Hershfelt received her second yellow card, reducing the visitors to ten players. Despite the numerical advantage, Kansas City couldn’t capitalize, with another goal-line clearance by Esme Morgan denying Debinha in the 76th minute.

Going against form, disadvantaged Washington brought on two attacking players, preventing Kansas City from aggressively pressing forward for the winner. Head coach Vlatko Andonovski noted after the match that over half of the Spirit’s transition opportunities came in the final 30 minutes — after the red card.

“Washington’s a great team, so to have that type of game going into playoffs is awesome, just getting us prepared,” said midfielder Claire Hutton after the match. “The talent that they have on that team matched up with the talent we have on our team. So it was exciting.”

Sentnor reflected on the team’s performance despite the goalless result: “I think we honestly created a lot of opportunities, especially in the first half, so I think we can be really proud of that. They, like us, are a very attacking, transition minded team and have a lot of pacey forwards that we had to have good countermeasures for.”

The Current introduced forward Alex Pfeiffer in the 88th minute for her first regular season appearance in 442 days, but couldn’t find a late winner.

With six matches remaining in the regular season, Kansas City continues its three-match homestand next Saturday when Seattle Reign FC visits CPKC Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

The draw keeps Kansas City firmly atop the NWSL standings, while Washington (10-4-6, 36 points) remains in second place. Both teams have effectively secured playoff berths, making Saturday’s tactical stalemate a telling glimpse into how postseason matches between elite teams might unfold.
