The Kansas City, Kansas Public Library is changing its enrollment process for the Mr. and Mrs. F.L. Schlagle summer camps, doing away with open enrollment to instead prioritize specific Wyandotte County zip codes and use a random drawing for non-Wyandotte County residents.
The library stated in an email that the change is due to a finding that 70 percent of campers were from outside Wyandotte County, and the county residents that did attend were mainly from the wealthier Wyandotte County zip codes.
The library expressed that it wants to change the demographics of the camp attendees in line with its “goal…to ensure a more equitable, inclusive and diverse experience for all families in our community.”
In the new process, 80 percent of each camp’s 25 spots are reserved for Wyandotte County residents, including two spots for children of camp volunteers. Priority for the resident spots is by zip code with the lowest household income. The library did not give the specific order, but cited 66105 and 66101 as examples of low income zip codes.
The remaining five spots can be used by non-Wyandotte County residents and are drawn randomly from applicants.
Residents and non-residents can register for the camp lottery between Feb. 15 and Mar. 14. More information can be found on the library’s web site.
