Kansas City, Kansas police officer Hunter Simoncic was remembered Thursday evening at a candlelight vigil at City Hall. Over a hundred officers from several area departments joined a couple hundred local residents in paying tribute to the 26-year old who was struck down during a police pursuit early Tuesday morning, while attempting to stop the fleeing vehicle.
Mayor Garner praised the young officer’s character. “ His ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on August 26th, 2025, is a reminder of the profound commitment he made to protect our community,” said the mayor.
“A commitment marked by bravery, compassion, and selfless service. More than a devoted public servant, Officer Simonic was a man of strong personal values, a son, a brother, a friend, and a protector to so many. His steadfast dedication to doing what was right earned the respect and affirmation of all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
“He was truly one of our heroes.”
Greenwood County Sheriff’s Deputy Blake Fisher, friends with Simoncic since their days as young corrections officers, recalled Simoncic’s thirst for adventure and quirky sense of humor, whether driving the rural backroads of southeast Kansas or moving off to the big city for a dream.
However, he closed with some bitter words of regret. “ I’m sorry you gave everything for a job that is oftentimes so thankless,” said the young deputy, wiping away tears.
“I am sorry that this coward who is not man enough to face the consequences of his own actions and intentionally murdered you. I’m sorry he is still here and you’re not. Finally, I’m sorry for all you endured and for all you didn’t get to finish. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten. We have it from here until we meet again.”

Marcos Moreno, a Turner high school student, was Simoncic’s “little brother” in the Big Brothers-Big Sisters program. He fondly recalled going to the gym together and riding in Simoncic’s truck listening to the Gracie Abrams hit “I love you, I’m sorry.”
“He just made me a better person,” said Moreno. “He made me have a different perspective on life.”
Moreno brought a handmade sign that read,
“My brother
My best friend
My family
Te amo hermano
My Hero”
