Guest Column: The Rebirth of the J.C. Harmon Hawks: A Family Legacy

By Pat Harris

If you want to understand how a football program completely transforms its culture, you have to look at the family bloodline leading it. The Harmon Hawks are building a brand new tradition of winning in Kansas City.

Voice of the community: Pat Harris

Up in the press box, the heartbeat of the stadium belongs to public address announcer Pat Harris. Long before taking the microphone at Harmon, Pat was Kansas City high school sports royalty. Back in 1990, he was a dominant, multi-sport varsity standout for Wyandotte High School, excelling in football, baseball, and track. Today, he is using his legendary energy to give back to the community, pumping up the crowd and creating a fierce home field advantage.

Warrior on the sidelines: Head Coach Ke’Von Smith

That electric synergy between the press box and the field is no accident. Head Coach Ke’Von Smith is Pat Harris’s son. Coach Smith grew up breathing competitive sports under his father’s guidance, molding him into a true warrior on the gridiron during his own playing days. Now, he has brought that exact grit, discipline, and championship mindset to Harmon, leading them to their first back-to-back victories since 2011.

Completing the gridiron tradition: Xavier Smith

The family dedication doesn’t stop there. Right beside Pat in the press box is his other son, Xavier Smith, who helps run the booth. With Coach Ke’Von commanding the sidelines, and Pat and Xavier orchestrating the stadium’s energy from above, the Smith-Harris family has turned Friday nights into a beautiful, tight-knit family system.

A Tradition of good people

Harmon is no longer just a football team; it is a developing powerhouse built on the backs of local, hardworking family people who genuinely care about the kids and their neighborhood. With a stellar record and building momentum, the Hawks are proving that when you have the right people in your system, history changes.
