Incumbents kept their seats with few surprises in Tuesday’s statehouse elections.
The closest escape was Jeff Pittman, who edged out Republican candidate and small businessman Jeff Klemp by only 57 votes of nearly 31 thousand cast in the 5th senate district, which includes northwest Wyandotte County, Basehor, and Leavenworth. There will be a recount before that race is decided.
In congressional races, Sharice Davids comfortably kept her seat in the Kansas third district, while Derek Schmidt kept the second district in Republican hands with a healthy lead over Nancy Boyda.
KCK voters accepted the school district’s bond proposal, and Edwardsville voters tacked on a penny to the city’s sales tax.
The contest for Kansas electoral college votes went with little doubt to Donald Trump, but the nationwide result was still a toss-up until well after midnight, with high-profile races in Pennsylvania and the upper Midwest still to be decided.
As the vote came in for those states, it was clear that Trump would return to the White House, and he addressed supporters and the nation at 1:30 a.m. Central time.
Uncontested judicial offices and judge retention votes were all in favor of the incumbents.
