All nine Wyandotte County high schools competed Wednesday on the mats at Piper in the WYCO Wrestling Championships.
The dual-level layout in the new Piper gym lends itself well to holding the tournament, with boys running on three mats on the main floor and the girls running on two mats on the auxiliary floor just above, giving coaches and fans of both teams easy access.
The Bonner Springs Braves won handily in the boys’ tournament, contesting the weight class titles in several cases against Piper, which came in second. Bonner Springs has three wrestlers featured in the most recent KWCA state rankings, D.J. Brown (4th at 132 pounds), Lane Vogel (2nd at 165), and Kayne Smith (5th at 190). Vogel achieved his milestone 100th win at the tournament.
The Lady Wildcats edged out Piper in the girls’ tournament, shuffling Bonner Springs, which has controlled the tournament for a few years, to third. Washington’s Reddi Johnson (2nd at 130) and Jaida Hawkins (2nd at 170) have been a fixture in the KWCA rankings this season, while Genessa Fierro (6th at 135), a state qualifier last year for Schlagle, also cracked the list in the most recent release.
