A celebration for everyone on Central Avenue

Riders from the 7 Leguas club closed out the parade with a huge amount of style.

The rain cleared up Saturday morning and left the day clear and bright for the Central Avenue parade, hosted by the Central Avenue Betterment Association. All five bands from the KCK school district participated, along with dance troupes, dignitaries, caballeros, and advocates.

The parade ran from Park Drive and 19th Street east down Central to just east of 12th Street, turning into Bethany Park, where food and merchandise vendors waited the crowds.

Wyandotte band director DeAndre Tatum, in true battle-of-the-bands style, gave the Schlagle band a good taunting as his musicians delivered another rousing song.

The Wyandotte, Washington, and Schlagle bands set up in the park for a traditional battle of the bands, with Sumner and Harmon conceding the field this year. Wyandotte had the volume and the tempo on its side this year, though a spirited showdown among the drum lines had the crowd rocking along with all three squads.
