The U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources will hold a hearing on legislation introduced by Reps. Derek Schmidt (KS-02), Sharice Davids (KS-03), and Emanuel Cleaver (MO-05) to designate the Quindaro Townsite as a National Historic Landmark.

The Quindaro Townsite National Historic Landmark Act will receive a hearing before the committee beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16.

Quindaro Townsite was founded in 1857 during the turbulent days of Bleeding Kansas. It became a critical entry point for anti-slavery settlers and a sanctuary for people escaping slavery through the Underground Railroad. 

The legislation would recognize Quindaro Townsite’s national historical significance and help preserve and promote the site for future generations.
