A proposal to build a large data center northwest of Kansas Speedway has prompted a special meeting of the Kansas City, Kan. Planning Commission Wednesday evening at 6:00 p.m.

Developer Aaron Wolofsky, of Red Wolf DCD Properties of Brooklyn, New York, has applied to rezone over 240 acres from agricultural and residential use to a business park designation. The zoning change also requires a change to the city’s master plan for the Prairie Delaware Piper area.

The land to be rezoned is currently vacant farm land, but the proposed use is quite different from the master plan’s vision of the area as a low-density residential community.

The proposed development sits between Parallel and State Avenue, and between 118th Street and 126th Street. The Gate of Heaven cemetery and Catholic archdiocese office are nearby to the northwest, and the north end of Wyandotte County Park is across State Avenue to the south.

The project calls for six large buildings to be constructed on the property. The name of the business park in the planning documents is Red Wolf Park North. The name of the company operating the data center has not been disclosed.

The planning commission staff has recommended approval of the project. A special meeting of the full UG board of commissioners has been set for Thursday at 5:00 p.m., preceding the commission’s regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 7:00 p.m.
