Unlike last Thursday’s more contentious and lengthy meeting, the May 1 meeting of the Unified Government Board of Commissioners looks to be more routine.
The board will vote on a variety of special use permits and re-zonings that the Planning Commission recommended for approval. There will also be honorary proclamations for Drinking Water Week, KCK Police Department Week, and Global Love Day (May 1).
The commission will honor several community volunteers and neighborhood association leaders as part of the Dotte Proud program.
At the end of the meeting, marketing research firm ETC Institute will present the results of the community survey commissioned by the UG.
Before the regular commission meeting at 7:00 p.m., there will also be a special 5:00 p.m. meeting of the commission to hear a presentation from Local 64 of the International Association of Fire Fighters, the union that represents KCK’s firefighters.
The union’s presentation will recommend increased staffing, along with an extensive plan to improve the city’s network of fire stations.
The union’s plan calls for replacing ten of the department’s twenty fire stations and remodeling six others. The presentation rates seven stations as “deplorable,” including the historic Station 11 on State Avenue.
Update: The meeting agenda has been updated to include a budget recap presentation from budget director Reginald Lindsey.
