Golubski skips trial, dead at 71

Roger Golubski, a longtime resident of Edwardsville, was found dead at his home on Monday, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 71.

He was set to go on trial in Topeka on six federal charges related to the abuse of two KCK women over the course of several years in the late 1990s and early 2000s while he was a member of the Kansas City, Kansas police department.

Authorities also planned to try him, along with three co-defendants, for a sex trafficking ring that he allegedly provided protection for in the 1990s.

Edwardsville police responded to a 911 call from a neighbor and found Golubski’s body on his back porch. A statement released later by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said that no foul play was suspected in the death. An autopsy is scheduled, and the investigation is ongoing.

The judge in the trial issued a warrant for his arrest when he failed to appear, but later in the morning after it became clear the accused was dead, prosecutors moved to dismiss the case.

The US Attorney’s office for the District of Kansas, which was prosecuting the cases, released a statement after the dismissal.

“The proceedings in this case may be over,” said the statement, “but its lasting impact on all the individuals and families involved remains. We wish them peace and the opportunity for healing as they come to terms with this development and ask that they all be treated with respect and their privacy respected.”
