Current bests Pachuca 3-0 in Summer Cup

Current forward Debinha scored twice in the first half of the team’s Summer Cup match against Liga MX Femenil team Pachuca.

The Kansas City Current continued to enjoy the Olympic break, picking up its second win in Summer Cup play, 3-0 over Liga MX Femenil side Pachuca.

The win puts the Current atop Group C of the Summer Cup, a mid-season tournament between the NWSL and Mexico’s Liga MX Femenil.

Current forward Michelle Cooper fired a cross from the left side.

The home squad was on the front foot from the start, with Debinha getting a shot in the second minute on a cross from Vanessa DiBernardo.

The Brazilian forward returned the favor in the ninth minute, but DiBernardo’s shot was just off frame.

Debinha opened the scoring in the 13th minute, taking a tap back from Hanna Glas on a rebounded corner kick and punching it in from 20 yards out up the middle.

Glas, recovering from a 2022 ACL injury, made her debut for the Current, marking her first NWSL action since signing with the club in February 2023. Glas played earlier in the year for the Swedish national team.

Debinha picked up her second goal of the match in the 29th minute, taking a centering pass from Kristen Hamilton and slamming it home with an acrobatic volley.

Hamilton took service from Michelle Cooper just four minutes later, getting on the end of a well-placed cross at the back post for a 3-0 advantage.

Bailey Feist nearly added to the first-half tally in extra time, but her header on DiBernardo’s cross was saved by Pachuca goalkeeper Esthefanny Barreras.

In the second half, the Current offense cooled its jets somewhat, but despite testing A.D. Franch late in the frame, Las Tuzas could not break through.

With a limited roster due to national team commitments and injuries, the match also saw the club debuts of UCLA senior Janae DeFazio, who came on for Glas in the 67th minute, and veteran NWSL and USWNT defender Allie Long, who came on for Ellie Wheeler in the 77th minute.

The Current will wrap up group play on Thursday against Tigres UANL Femenil, from San Nicolas de los Garza, in the northeastern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon. Tigres defeated Pachuca 4-2 in its Summer Cup opener.

A win or draw against Tigres will put Kansas City through to the Summer Cup semi-finals, to be held at CPKC Stadium on August 6 as a double-header.
