Starting Saturday, Mar. 1, US Highway 69 (18th Street) will be closed between K-32 on the north and Ruby Ave. on the south. The closure is being done to replace the 1950s-era bridge over the Kansas River and BNSF railroad yards. The important artery to the Argentine area is scheduled to be closed until fall of 2027.
Northbound traffic will exit at Ruby Avenue and southbound traffic will exit at Kansas Ave./K-32. Traffic will be diverted to I-70, I-635, and I-35..
The old bridge was last refurbished in 2018, but additional maintenance would no longer extend its usability. The new bridge will feature wider lanes and shoulders, a stone-pattern exterior design, and fencing to screen the view of the railroad yards from the bridge.
The project will also make improvements to the intersecting bridges at Metropolitan, Osage, and Ruby Ave.
